Veterinary Internship In California

After graduating in veterinary in Thai Nguyen Agriculture and Forestry, student Luong Nhu Y decided to take part in a foreign internship program to improve the professional skill in his field. He expected to work in the most modern dairy cattle farms in Vietnam. Here are some sharings of Nhu Y (K40 – veterinary medicine) about his current job and life in California

With the help from International Training and Development Centre(ITC) – Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry(TUAF), I have realized my longtime dream of going to the US with new experiences. I chose to intern at dairy cattle or pig farms because that’s the major I learn in the university .Lucky for me, I got chosen to intern in the dairy cow farms. 3 months after arrival, the initial worriness and being like a-fish-out-of-the-water feeling have gone, I want to share my initial impression about lifestyle and people in Carlifornia where I’m living.

I remember the very first days I came to this country: everything was new and strange to me although I have undergone a 1 year internship in Israel. I felt that the Americans are so friendly: they smiled with me every time and everywhere, said thank you and apologized for the smallest things. I was placed in Calirfornia, a state in the West of the US. The climate here is warm and similar to Vietnam so I quickly adapted to weather condition to catch up with farm’s job and living pace. There are many Asian cuisine shops like Walmart and Wincofood for you to buy food but trying American dishes once in a while is very interesting. The host truly cared about us: they provided us with everything necessary for the job and  for living, and they considered us as part of their family. There was no discrimination between host and the interns.

In my job, I worked in dairy cattle farms with foreign students from Philipine, Ukraine, South Africa, etc. They are so funny and easy-going so I feel less isolated in the foreign country.

Working in the 700 counts dairy cattle farms is so suitable for students studying animal husbandry and veterinary medicine. In here, you will have the opportunity to experience professional and scientific working environment. Besides, you will learn knowlege of your major and practice those knowledge right in the farm.

The most impressive thing is I got instructed by two American veterinarians about embryo transplanting . That’s knowledge we learned vaguely in university. It’s interesting and intriguing

.The host paid me and other interns money in the form of cheque and guided us to do related procedure. For the money received, I sent to Vietnam to help my parents and save for future plan. I am actively learning English with other interns to prepare for the 4-month semester at University of Minnesota in the next year.

Although I just arrived here and catched up with American lifestyle for a short time but I think I have made the right choice when choosing the USA internship program of Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry. Those’re my thoughts and I’m sure there are lots of students sharing the same when they arrive to the US. You can hear other student’s opinion to have an overall view about this program . I wish you all succeed with your own choices!
